Lesson Plan: A Day In The Park

Lesson Level:   Junior 1                     Duration:  45 Minutes

Lesson Title:     In the Park

Grammar and Vocabulary

Use of present continuous for current actions.
Flying a kite, running,playing football,walking the dog,throwing away the rubbish, climbing a tree, sailing a toy boat, eating a hotdog, talking/chatting, playing on the swing,  singing, feeding the birds, having a picnic, olaying tennis, picking the flowers, rowing a boat, .

Lesson Objectives

 To practice the use of present continuous for actions being performed NOW.

Materials Required

A large map of a park with areas marked A - P.1
Sixteen smaller pictures illustrating above vocabulary items and a key to which numbered activity goes with each letter.

Preparation

Prepare the map and activity pictures. Prepare the key.2


Procedure

1 Write title “A day in the park.”
   Ask students if they ever go to the park.
  Ball toss to ask what they like to do in the park.

2 Put map on the board.
   Elicit and write the names of areas on the board at the side of the map.
  (trees, lake, pond, path, playground, football pitch, tennis court, cafe, shop, flowers.)

3 One at a time show the pictures of the activities.
   Elicit what they are doing in each picture.
   Add the picture to the map according to the key.

4 Allow one minute to study the map.

5. Move pictures (in number order) to another part of board and put them face down.

6 Use ball toss to select students,
   Student must say a number and then make a sentence of the form.
  He/She/They is/are ________ing on/at in the ________.

   If student is right put picture back on map. If not show it to the class and put it face down again.

7 When all pictures are on the map practice repeating the sentences with the whole class.

8. Put class in groups of four.
Each group must think of four things they like doing in the park.
Give sample sentences
I like walking through the trees.
I like feeding the birds.
I like sitting in the sun.
I like looking at the flowers.

9. Ask groups to tell class the things they like doing.

10. Extension task:
      Repeat 8 and 9 but now they must say what they like doing in the park IN WINTER,
