Lesson Level:  Senior                       Duration:  40 minutes

Lesson Title:   Dream Homes

Grammar and Vocabulary
Rooms in a house (including rarer rooms)
 .

Lesson Objectives
Students will revise names and functions for rooms in a house.
Students will learn names for additional rooms.1

Materials Required
A pre-drawn plan of your own home (or another home).2

Preparation
Prepare plan

Procedure

1
Show plan of own home.
Elicit names and functions of rooms using ball toss to select students.
(My plan includes “closet” and “landing” as new vocabulary.)
Ask questions about the plan.
e.g. Do you like my home? Do you think it is big enough? Is it like your home? What is your home like?

2
Divide class into about eight groups.
Give groups one or two (depending on level) minutes to write down as many different rooms as possible. If necessary suggest some rooms (e.g. Tea-room, Swimming Pool, KTV room)
While groups are working divide board into columns, one per group.
Walk around and check on task.
At end get one student from each group to come and write lists on board.
Mark as follows two points for a correctly named, correctly spelled room, one point for an incorrectly spelled room, one point if function identified but not correct name (e.g. Flower room for conservatory)
Give one point only for rooms that were on your own plan.
While marking give correct names for any rooms identified but not named.

3
Regroup class into smaller groups (four students in each group.)
Write these instructions on the board.

Each group
Design your own dream home.
You can have as many floors as you like.
You can have any kind of room that you like.
Draw a plan and write the names of all the rooms.

4
Monitor and assist as required.

5.
Ask groups one at a time to present their house. Put these instructions on board.

Present your house to the class.
How many floors does it have.
What rooms did you include? Why did you choose those rooms?

Notes

  1. Rooms that can be used include – tea room, coffee room, swimming pool, music room, art room, gallery, KTV room, utility room, nursery, conservatory etc.
  2. I use two plans, one of my apartment here in China and the other of my house in the UK. I also ask which of the two they like better.
