Objectives
Revision
Materials
Required
Note:-
this lesson is VERY resource heavy.3
You
will need
One
dice for each group
The
following sets of prepared materials
- A list of definitions for the students to guess the words.
- A list of topics for the students to talk about for 45 seconds
- A list of words for students to use in a sentence
- A list of words for students to define
- A list of things for students to “name ten”
- A list of General knowledge questions and answers
Suggested
lists are provided in the notes but these need to be tailored to the
levels and previous knowledge of the class.
Preparation
Prepare
all materials.
Procedure
1
Divide
the class into six-8 groups. For longer lessons more groups can be
used. For a forty minute lesson more than eight is impractical.
2
Tell
each group to think of a name for their team and choose a team
leader.
(Give
them about thirty seconds.
3
While
they do that divide the board into one large area for instructions
and small areas for the score for each team.
4
Ask
each group their team name and write it on the board in one of the
team areas. Leave space to keep score.
5.
In
the instructions are leave a space at the top for later and write.
- What's the word?.................................30 seconds
- Talk for 45 seconds about....................45 seconds
- Use in a sentence................................30 seconds
- What does it mean?.............................30 seconds
- Can you think of 10?............................1 minute
- Question and answer...........................30 seconds
Give
the leader of each group a dice.
6
Explain
that each group will roll the dice in turn and get a question from
the category.
If
the group doesn't answer in the time on the board then the next group
can try.
A
successful answer will get two points for the group.
If
the second group gets it they will get one point.
7
Play
the game and keep scores.
Each
turn proceeds as follows.
Group
rolls dice
Teacher
writes the word/ topic/ question in the space on the board.
(Use
a different colour if possible.)
Teacher
tells group what they must do according to the number rolled.
Group
can discuss for the time alotted.
Leader
stands to give answer
If
correct, award tat group two points.
If
incorrect ask the next group.
If
they answer correctly award that group one point.
If
incorrect teacher gives answer and plays next round.
Notes
- You will need to prepare your own lists of for each of the six areas. You can, for lower level classes substitute some alternate games – for example, a list of words for students to come to board and draw, a list of words (Jobs, animals, hobbies etc) for students to mime. For primary students I have used three topics – draw, act and make the noise.
- If you regularly teach the same class this is a good end of term activity using words and topics that you have covered during the term.
