Lesson Plan: I Can

Lesson Level: Junior 1 and 2 (Grades 7 and 8) Duration: 45 Minutes

Lesson Title: I Can

Grammar and Vocabulary

Use of “can” in questions and positive and negative answers.

Lesson Objectives

To practice use of structures associated with “Can”
Pronunciation practice in song.

Materials Required

A simple dialogue illustrating two or three straightforward uses of “I can”. (Board poster size or from student text books.)
Ball for ball toss activity.
Set of twenty cards showing activities (cook a meal, ride a horse, hold my breath for one minute etc)
Words to simplified version of “Anything You Can Do” (see notes) written on posters for board (separate poster for each verse)



Preparation

The posters need to be carefully prepared before the lesson.
If using a dialogue on the board put the poster up.
If using books get students to open books at correct page.

Procedure

1

Introduce lesson.
Choose students to read through dialogue.
Repeat if necessary.
(5 Minutes)

Write forms for can/can’t on board inc. question forms.
Use ball toss to demonstrate the q&a forms.
Allow students to toss ball student tossing asks question student catching answers.
(5 Minutes)

3

Divide class into four large groups.

Write instructions for activity on board
I will choose a leader
I will give the leader five cards
Leader must find five different people in his group who can do what it says.
When leader has found all five they must run back to the front.
First team finished wins.
Choose a leader for each group.
Call leaders to front.
Play the game. Write team places on board. (This may change!)
Sit leaders back down
Go to each person with a card.
Ask “Can you______”.
If they can take the card.
If they can’t take card and move team down one place on board for not finding someone.
Repeat for all cards.
(15 Minutes)

Move the students around (if possible) to put all girls together and all boys together.

Explain that for this song boys will sing the red part and girls will sing the blue part.

6

Put first verse on board – practice.
Repeat for other parts.
Practise whole song.

(20 Minutes)


Notes

1. Note the posters for the song should contain lyrics as follows.
Further verses may be added.
In chorus after verse 3 students should get higher and higher with each line.
In chorus after verse 3 students should get faster and faster with each line.
Finish with a reprise of verse 1 sung by whole class
