Lesson Plan:Friends For Ever

Note:
This lesson was devised for a Junior 2 class I had not taught before. They were of a much lower level than I was expecting. Because of this there was no time for the main activity of creating and performing a new dialogue.

Lesson Level:        Junior 2               Duration:  40 Minutes

Lesson Title:     Friends For Ever

Grammar and Vocabulary

The dialogue contains the following new words which may need to be explained:
primary school, enemy, steal/stole/stolen, sign up, pageant, duet,
dance routine, peas in a pod, rehearse, embarrassed

Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to create lists of adjectives or short phrases describing good and bad qualities in people.
Students will be able to create dialogues representing a conversation between two friends.

Materials Required
Copies of the dialogue. See Notes.
Ball

Preparation
Prepare enough copies of the dialogue to give one for each group of four students.

Procedure

1
Write “FRIENDS” as the title on board. Check that students understand the idea of “friends”.  Ask several students who is their best friend and why. Tell students who is your best friend and why.

2
Put students into groups of four.
Give each group a copy of the dialogue.
Got through vocabulary on the board.
Choose three girls to read the dialogue.
Have three girls read the parts of Mel, Rosie and Mother while class follow along. Assist them with difficult words
(You may need to read it again yourself afterwards to make sure whole class could hear.)
Toss the ball around the class asking questions about the dialogue.
eg.
When Did Mel and Rosie first meet. (Primary School)
When is the school pageant? (Next Month)
What does Mel want to do in the pageant? (Sing and Dance like Lady Gaga)
Why is she mad at Rosie?
            Who comes to the door?
How has Mel misunderstood what Rosie did?
Why will they be like “peas in a pod”?
Where do they go to rehearse?

3
Write headings on board.
A GOOD FRIEND and A BAD FRIEND
Elicit adjectives or phrases to describe a good friend and a bad friend.
Write lists on the board.

4
Tell each group they must write a new dialogue like the one they have just read. It must be a conversation between two friends. There must be at least 5 exchanges.

5.
Groups write new dialogues. Go around the class and monitor and assist them.

6
Choose some of the groups to act out their dialogues. (There probably won’t be time for everyone to do it.)

Notes

Dialogue

This dialogue comes from the book “Link: Connecting Your English”. This book is only available to certain schools in China. As I wrote it you have my permission to use it freely. :D

Melanie
I'm never going to talk to Rosie again!
Mother
But Rosie has been your best friend since primary school.
Melanie
Well she isn't my best friend now!
Mother
Why what's happened ?
Melanie
I don't want to talk about it. I'm so angry at her. She's more like an enemy than a friend.
Mother
Tell me all about it.
Melanie
She's stolen my idea for the school pageant next month. I was going to sing and dance Paparazzi by Lady Gaga but when I went to sign up they told me that Rosie had already put down exactly the same thing.
Mother
Did you talk to her about it?
Melanie
Of course not. I told you, I'm never going to talk to her again!
Mother
Well I think you should call her.
Melanie
No!

(Doorbell Rings)
Mother
There is someone at the door. Go and see who it is?
Melanie
OK. Oh, it's you. What do you want?
Rosie
Isn't it great? My idea for the pageant?
Melanie
Great? You stole my idea. How can that be great?
Rosie
What do you mean? I didn't steal your idea.
Melanie
Yes you did. I was going to sing and dance as Lady Gaga.
Rosie
Yes, I know and now I am.
Melanie
See! You did steal my idea.
Mother
No! Didn't they tell you. I signed up for both of us. We can do it together. We can sing it as a duet and practice the dance routine together. It will be great. We can dress the same and our hair is already very similar. We'll be like peas in a pod. We both know all the words. It...
Melanie
You want to do it together?
Rosie
Yes. Of course. You didn't think that I would just try to take your place did you?
Melanie
Well...
Rosie
Oh Mel, I'd never do that! We're best friends. We always do everything together.
Melanie
I'm sorry Rosie. I thought you were going to do it all alone. I feel so embarrassed now.
Mother
Why don't you too go up to your room and start rehearsing?
Melanie
That's a great idea. Come on Rosie. I'm sorry I didn't trust you.
Rosie
It doesn't matter. We'll be great. And we'll always be friends.
Melanie
Always.
