Lesson Plan: Visiting The Doctor

Lesson Level: Senior 1 Duration: 40 Minutes

Lesson Title: Visiting the Doctor

Grammar and Vocabulary
Illnesses and Ailments
Dialogues at doctors' surgeries

Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to describe symptoms and understand advice given by a doctor.

Materials Required
Worksheets, dialogue cards (see notes)

Preparation
Prepare the worksheets and patient/doctor dialogue cards.
Patient cards should be cut up as individual cards. The Doctor sheet should be kept as a single large sheet.

Procedure

1
Write “Visiting the doctor” on the board.
Elicit and write on board reasons to visit the doctor (cold, broken arm etc)

Write the words Ailment, Duration, Symptom, Medication, Diagnosis Prescribe  on the board

Elicit meanings/definitions
Add definitions
eg.
Ailment           What is wrong with you
Duration          How long you have had it
Symptom         How it shows
Medication      What you can take for it
Diagnosis        What the doctor says
Prescribe          Tell the patient what to take
Prescription     What the patient should take

Give out the pictures worksheet (Note 1)
Allow about two minutes only to solve it.
Elicit the answers and write them on the board.
Explain any unfamiliar terms.

Create a dialogue on the board. You can write it yourself for weaker classes or elicit suggestions from stronger classes

eg.
Doctor: Hi, come on in and have a seat. Now what seems to be the problem?
Patient: Doctor, I have a stomach ache.
Doctor: How long have you had it?
Patient: I've had it about three days.
Doctor: Are you taking anything for it?
Patient: I bought some medicine at the pharmacy but it didn't help.
Doctor: I see. Are you allergic to anything?
Patient: Not that I know of.
Doctor: I'm going to give you a prescription for indigestion.
Patient: How often should I take it?
Doctor:You should take it before meals.

Divide class into groups.
In each group give strongest student the “doctor information sheet” (Notes 2 and 3)
Give every other student one or more patient cards.
Students in groups must practice dialogues modelled after the one on the board.

As they practice monitor and assist as needed.

Choose some pairs of students to stand up and model their dialogues for the class.

Ailment: You have diarrhoea.

Previous Medication: You have taken some medicine that you bought at the chemist.
Ailment: You have a sore throat

Duration: You have had it for two days.

Previous Medication: You have been taking some throat lozenges (throat sweets).
Ailment: You have a bad cut on your leg.

Duration: You cut yourself this morning when mowing the lawn.

Previous Medication: None.
Ailment: You have a headache

Duration: You have had it for one week.

Previous Medication: You have been taking headache tablets which you bought from the chemist, but it keeps coming back.
Ailment: You have a bump on the head

Duration: You did it one hour ago. You fell off your bike.

Previous Medication: You haven't taken anything.
Ailment: You have a cough

Duration: You have had it for one week.

Previous Medication: You have been taking medicine which you bought from the chemist, but it is not helping.
Ailment: You have a broken leg

Duration: You fell off a building when working one hour ago.

Previous Medication: You have not taken anything.
Ailment: You keep vomiting

Duration: You have had it for one day

Previous Medication: You have not taken anything for it.
Ailment: You have a stomach ache

Duration: You have had it for three days

Previous Medication: You haven't taken anything for it.

Doctor
Ailment: rash

Prescribe: a cream.

Duration: Apply four times a day.

Extra Advice:
(a) Avoid scratching your skin.
(b) Use as little soap as possible.
Ailment: diarrhoea

Prescribe: some medicine

Duration:Take twice daily.

Extra Advice:
(a) Drink plenty of water
(b) Avoid foods containing milk.
Ailment: sore throat

Prescribe: some medication

Duration:Take every four hours.

Extra Advice:
(a) Drink plenty of liquids.
(b) Drink warm tea with honey.
Ailment: cuts

Prescribe: a cream

Duration:Apply three times daily.

Extra Advice:
(a) Wash carefully with mild soap.
(b) Keep dirt out of it.
Ailment: Headache
Prescribe: Some tablets

Duration: Take four times per day

Extra Advice:
(a) Drink lots of water
(b) Do not eat foods that are bad for you
Ailment: bump on head
Prescribe: a cream.

Duration: Apply four times a day.

Extra Advice:
(a) Avoid scratching your head
(b) Rest for a few days
Ailment: Cough
Prescribe: some medicine

Duration: Take three times per day

Extra Advice:
(a) Do not smoke
(b) Drink honey and lemon tea
Ailment: Broken Leg
Prescribe: Go to hospital to have a plaster cast put on.
Duration: Go back to hospital in six weeks

Extra Advice:
(a) Avoid scratching your skin.
(b) Do not get the cast wet.
Ailment: Vomiting
Prescribe: some medicine

Duration: Take before meals

Extra Advice:
(a) Avoid fatty foods
(b) Do not drink alcohol
Ailment: stomach ache
Prescribe: some medicine

Duration: twice a day

Extra Advice:
(a) Avoid fatty and sugary foods
(b) Drink lots of water
